Our vision is to see the city of Seattle begin to look more and more like the city of God. Our mission is to actively serve and sacrifice for the spread of the gospel in our community and our city. Guided by common values, we partner with local efforts through prayer, participation, and finances in areas of focus. Click here to hear how God is changing lives in this way. For more information on Serving the City, email Lee Grooms.
Through Serving the City, Grace Seattle financially supports the following individuals and organizations:
Bring socks to church! Homeless people are on their feet all day and rarely have more than one pair of socks-- which are usually wet. We'll be collecting new white adult men's socks at Grace until Sunday, 10 October in support of Operation Nightwatch's "Sock It to the Homeless" event. Just drop off your socks in the bin next to the Information Table in the lobby.
The Sharing Tree: In partnership with our building hosts, the Volunteer Park Seventh-day Adventist Church, we're collecting non-perishable food items, clothing, and toiletries to be be shared with their church's Food Bank Ministry, Childhaven, and other agencies serving community needs. A list of needs is available at the "tree" in the lobby-- please help by bringing along donations each week! Email Lee Grooms.
Operation Nightwatch: Join the group from Grace that cooks and serves dinner on the second Tuesday of each month (7:30-10:00 pm) for homeless and low-income people at the Operation Nightwatch Dispatch Center in the International District. Email Coleen Marta.
Learn issues of homeless and street-involved youth: New Horizons Ministries, a Christian, interdenominational, non-profit agency serving Seattle's street youth, holds its next training on Saturdays, 18 and 25 September, from 8:30 am-5:00 pm. Topics include street culture, prostitution, chemical abuse, relational counseling, and spiritual formation. Registration is $75; partial scholarships available. Contact Edward Sumner (email, 206.374.0866 x133)
Join Seattle Against Slavery: Become an abolitionist with this new, grassroots, citizen-led coalition fighting human trafficking locally and globally. Email Paul Jaussen.
Shopping at Costco this month? Donations of Costco-sized margarine, Parmesan cheese, Tang, and cookie dough are gladly accepted for a monthly dinner for homeless and low-income people with Operation Nightwatch. Email Coleen Marta.
Special thanks to The Essential Baking Company in Madison Valley for their generous donations of baked goods to our monthly Operation Nightwatch dinners.
Serve seniors on Capitol Hill: Visit with seniors at Exeter House during their Tuesday afternoon worship services or at other times (assisting with bingo or other activities). Visitors are also welcome to provide music or bring other hobbies for display. Contact Chaplain Alan Beasley (email, 206.215.1306).
Help the homeless move into homes! The Self-Managed-Housing Program and The Homelessness Project (part of the Church Council of Greater Seattle) help move formerly homeless residents from temporary to permanent housing.
Union Gospel Mission has many opportunities to serve our city.
Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner families and volunteer labor. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses. Contact the Seattle/South King County or East King County affiliate to see how you can help.
Senior Services is seeking reliable, caring individuals to drive and escort seniors in our community to medical appointments—they do not have enough volunteers to help all of the seniors who call for rides. They offer flexible hours, supplemental insurance, and mileage and parking reimbursement. Volunteers use their own vehicles and do no lifting or bearing of weight. Call 206.448.5740, 800.282.5815, or apply online.
